kinetic motion study
Choreographing, Programming Assistance, Electrical Engineering Assistance
A zen-like experience which has an attracting and fascinating effect on the viewer. This was the goal of the project and the mantra while developing the choreography of this machine. The result is a mixture of a slow, circling flow and on the contrary very strong and powerful moments of movement.
I joined the project in its advanced phase, taking on key tasks like assembling and soldering electronic components to ensure functionality and assisted with programming. Once the build was complete, I moved on to choreographing and exploring the machine’s full range of kinetic motions, pushing its potential to the limit.
We tried to figure out the best way of controlling and choreographing the machine. Whilst at first we wanted to steer it through planning rhythms and patterns with numbers and algorithms we figured out it was too complicated and time consuming. Michael Schmitz created a recording program instead, which interpreted the input of a midi board into behaviour of the machine.
Through a midi-board the machine was controlled during several live session.
The movement of the full plane was steered through 3 strong motors.
This was necessary to move all the particles to specific directions, so they would be able to create the intended patterns.
With 19 servo motors, various patterns were created.
A mix of geometric and random-like patterns should create variety but sometimes also calming moments.
